‘Miss Austen’: Keeley Hawes & Rose Leslie Join TV Adaptation

Keeley Hawes (It’s A Sin, Bodyguard) and Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones, Vigil) will star in Miss Austen, the television adaptation of Gill Hornby’s bestselling novel that’s in the works for Masterpiece. The BBC has acquired the series, which is distributed by Federation Studios.

Patsy Ferran (Living) and Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away with Murder) have also joined the cast of the adaptation from BAFTA-winning writer Andrea Gibb, as well as Max Irons (The Wife), Calam Lynch (Bridgerton), Jessica Hynes (Years and Years), Mirren Mack (The Witcher: Blood Origin), Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey), Kevin McNally (The Crown) and Liv Hill (Elizabeth Is Missing).

The four-part drama, directed by the BAFTA-winning Aisling Walsh, started filming last month in the UK and is produced by Stella Merz.

Set in 1830, Miss Austen takes a literally mystery — Cassandra Austen (Hawes) notoriously burning her famous sister Jane’s letters — and reimagines it as a heart-breaking story of sisterly love.

“Miss Austen is a beautifully told story about the loves and losses of the Austen sisters. I’m thrilled that this heartfelt, romantic, and funny adaptation is in the hands of a remarkable ensemble cast led by the incredible Keeley Hawes,” said Susanne Simpson, Masterpiece Executive Producer.

Miss Austen is a co-production of Bonnie Prods and Masterpiece, in association with the BBC and Federation Stories. EPS are Christine Langan for Bonnie Prods, Simpson for Masterpiece and Polly Williams for Federation Stories. Hawes, Gibb and Walsh are also EPs.

Masterpiece is presented on PBS by GBH Boston.

Kit Harington and Rose Leslie attend ‘couples therapy’ in Richard Curtis film for Make My Money Matter

Kit Harington and Rose Leslie attend ‘couples therapy’ in Richard Curtis film for Make My Money Matter

Kit and Rose are co-starring in a Richard Curtis short film highlighting the “toxic relationship” between UK high street banks and the fossil fuel industry. The film is part of Curtis’s Make My Money Matter campaign to raise awareness of how consumers’ cash may be financing industries that are destroying the planet.

In the film, they play a couple sitting on a sofa in a therapist’s office attempting to work through their issues. It gradually emerges that Kit’s character represents a high street bank, and has been hiding his love for Rose’s character, who represents an oil company. The campaign calls on the big five UK banks – Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest and Santander – to stop financing new oil, gas and coal expansion, and said it was inviting the public to join it in “pressuring them to stop”.

Kit said: “This is an incredibly important awareness campaign about the dangerous relationship between our banks and the fossil fuel industry. But it is more than just awareness – people really care about this – and it’s time for banks to listen and act.
Myself and Rose were perfect examples of not having thought about this, so the idea of this being an awareness campaign was a really attractive one. It made me call up my bank, look at where my money was going and try to do something about it, which is important before getting into a campaign like this.”
“I think me and Rose really loved the idea of getting on camera together again for the first time in many years and playing this strange couple, where you’re not quite sure what’s going on. Hopefully our purpose in this is that we lend our faces to something that people are intrigued enough to click on and think: ‘What are those two doing acting together again?’ and they’re made aware of the campaign itself.

Fun fact : Richard Curtis said the original script “did not have the couple kissing passionately and falling back on to the sofa together, but Kit and Rose for some reason or other felt this would be a very helpful punchline and they did it enthusiastically, take after take”. (source)

‘Hope Reborn’ Music Video in support of MS Society and Overcoming MS

Rose stars in the new music video from classical composer and film director Fabio D’Andrea created in partnership with charities Overcoming MS and the MS Society. She gives a powerful performance as Amy, a young woman living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Don’t miss the video just below and if you can, please consider downloading the single to help raise funds for both charities – it costs less than 1$ !

Here is what Rose said about the project : I’ve been an avid supporter of the fantastic MS Society for a while now. I felt like this was a wonderful opportunity to educate people who know little about multiple sclerosis. When they watch the video, I hope that they are enlightened about the invisible symptoms.
During filming we met some fantastic volunteers from the MS Society and from Overcoming MS who were kind enough to share their first-hand experiences of living with the condition. It was really important to us that the portrayal of the condition in the video was as authentic as possible.
I really hope that the video will provide a positive message to anyone who does have this condition – that it’s still possible to live a full life. »

Rose announced as Firefly’s newest patron

Rose has been announced as the newest patron of Firefly International, a Scottish charity working with children who have been affected by war.

Firefly believes that the best way to support children whose lives have been affected by war and its aftermath is working with small, local projects who know what is needed on the ground making the projects have the greatest impact.

Based in the UK and run by a part time team with active volunteers and trustees, we monitor and support the organisations to whom we donate money.

Our work consistently proves that these collaborations have improved the lives and futures of children living in some of the world’s most devastated countries.
