Rose Leslie on bonding over motherhood and murder (‘Radio Times Magazine’ Interview)

Unly 5 days left until Rose is back on our screens in BBC drama « Vigil » ! Rose sadly isn’t able to promote the show with the rest of the cast as she’s still in New York filming HBO’s « The Time Traveler’s Wife », but a short interview of her is featured in the latest issue of Radio Times Magazine (scans available in the gallery here). A new still and promotional picture featuring Rose as DS Kirsten Longacre and Suranne Jones as DCI Amy Silva have also been released, enjoy !

What appealed to you about Vigil?
« The fact that it was a BBC drama. Sunday-night dramas were a staple of our household, and they were a big part of my teenage years, so that was a massive pull. The other big factor was Suranne Jones. »

She told me you two became great friends…
« When I came back to filming in August last year, I was six months pregnant — and she gave me such wonderful tips, so we very much bonded over motherhood. I’ve got all the time in the world for Suranne. »

Do you enjoy watching murder mysteries and police dramas?
« I love procedurals and my favourite television programme is Luther. Now being part of one is very, very cool. I think Vigil is going to be a gripping television series that people can get behind. »

You’re associated with a lot of long-running dramas such as Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones. Is there a difference in how you approach a series like Vigil that has only six episodes?
« In my head there is an end point, and there’s a satisfaction in playing a character where you have a finite amount of time to play her and to make sure that all of the tics that she has are established on screen and embed who she is as a person. It’s wonderful to have a shorter lifespan for a character. I find it more satisfactory. »

How much did the fact you grew up in Scotland help in nailing the accent, too?
« I think it gave me a head start. I definitely had a Scottish accent when I was younger. My family and I moved to France when I was about ten, but I kind of tapped into what I remember from all those years ago. »

Was there a particular moment during filming Vigil that stands out?
« We were in a quarry in the middle of nowhere in the beautiful Scottish landscape. The vastness was out there in front of you, and I was feeling very queasy because I was about eight months pregnant. And just before I had to film my scene, I had to run behind a bush to be sick. So I kept apologising to the hair and make-up people whenever they came anywhere near me because of my breath! »

BBC One’s « Vigil » to launch in August

Good news, Rose will soon be back on our screens in new BBC’s thriller « Vigil » in only two weeks ! To accompany the news, new images have been released, including one featuring Rose as DS Kirsten Longacre and Gary Lewis as Detective Superintendent Colin Robertson.

Episode one will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on Sunday 29 August, with episode two at 9pm on the Bank Holiday Monday, 30 August. Vigil will then continue each Sunday night, with new episodes premiering weekly on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by BAFTA-nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta-winner James Strong, and Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

First look at ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ !

HBO has launched a first-look image at the new drama series THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE, which has just begun production in New York !

The six-episode HBO drama series, directed by the Emmy®-winning David Nutter (“Game of Thrones”, “Band of Brothers”), stars Rose Leslie (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) as Clare and Theo James (“Divergent”) as Henry.

THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE is an intricate and magical love story, adapted by Steven Moffat from the much loved novel by Audrey Niffenegger, that tells the story of Clare and Henry, and a marriage with a problem…time travel.

Joining the cast is Desmin Borges (“You’re the Worst”), as Clare’s best friend, Gomez, and Natasha Lopez (“Runner Runner”), as Charisse, his girlfriend.

Steven Moffat, Writer and Executive Producer quote: “This is a story of loss but it’s not a tragedy. It’s about a time traveler but it’s not science fiction. Despite Clare and Henry’s time scrambled relationship, this is the tale of a grand, ordinary love – but not necessarily in that order. This is a dream project for me. I have always loved Audrey Niffenegger’s extraordinary, moving novel and it has inspired me many times, so to be adapting it for television is the thrill of a lifetime. Working with David Nutter is a joy and an honour already, and with Rose Leslie and Theo James as Clare and Henry, and Natasha Lopez and Desmin Borges as Charisse and Gomez, this is going to be the love story we need right now.

Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Drama Programming quote: “Steven Moffat is the perfect writer to bring this beloved book and genre-bending story about marriage to life. We also couldn’t be more thrilled that David Nutter will be returning to HBO to direct all episodes of the season.«

THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE is an HBO and Warner Bros. Television production based on the book by Audrey Niffenegger, is executive produced by Steven Moffat (“Doctor Who,” “Sherlock”), Sue Vertue, and Brian Minchin through Hartswood Films; Joseph E. Iberti; and David Nutter.

Rose Leslie & Theo James To Star In ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ HBO Series

2021 is off to a good start for Rose : a few weeks ago, she gave birth to her first child with husband Kit Harington, a boy – congratulations to them ! ♥ (The news was confirmed after they stepped out with their baby in London but as usual, pictures taken without their consent by paparazzi invading their privacy are not shared here.)

Today, it has been announced that Rose has landed the titular role in HBO’s adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife ! The series is currently in pre-production and is rumored to start filming in May in NYC.

Rose Leslie and Theo James have been tapped as the leads in The Time Traveler’s Wife, HBO’s drama series based on the novel by Audrey Niffenegger.

Adapted by former Dr. Who head writer and Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat, The Time Traveler’s Wife tells the intricate love story of Clare (Leslie) and Henry (James), and a marriage with a problem… time travel.

The series marks Game of Thrones alumna’s Leslie return to HBO. Her Claire Abshire is fiery, clever and unstoppable – and for most of her life she’s had an amazing secret. Since she was six years old, Clare has had an imaginary friend: a kind and funny man, sometimes old, sometimes young, who appears in the woods behind her house and tells her tales of the future. Visits from the mysterious Henry are the bright spots in the tedium of her childhood. As the years pass, and she grows into a beautiful young woman, she starts to realize her friend is not imaginary – he’s a time traveler, visiting from the future. And he’s not just from any old future – he’s from her future. Clare has a literal date with destiny. One day she’s going to meet a young man called Henry DeTamble – whom she’ll know very well but who won’t recognize her at all – and she will become the time traveler’s wife.

James’s Henry DeTamble has a problem. Since he was eight years old he’s been time traveler. It’s not a superpower, it’s a condition – he can’t help it. Sometimes, when Henry is stressed or worried – and sometimes for no reason at all – he loses his grip on the current moment and falls naked into the past or the future. One minute he’s making breakfast, the next he’s naked at a hoedown in 1973. He can be stuck there for minutes or months, he never knows. His life is a rollercoaster of constant danger and white-knuckle survival. Until one day he meets a beautiful redhead in the library where he works. Her name is Clare Abshire and although he’s never seen her before, she claims to have known him all her life. Finally his curse has given him something good – and Clare and Henry are about to have the time of their lives!

Moffat, Sue Vertue and Brian Minchin executive produce through their Hartswood Films. The company produces in association with Warner Bros. Television, which has rights to the title. Warner Bros.’ New Line division was behind the 2009 feature adaptation of the book that starred Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. The series is currently in pre-production.

The Time Traveler’s Wife has been a priority project for HBO, which landed it in 2018 in a highly competitive situation with a straight-to-series order.

“I read Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife many years ago, and I fell in love with it. In fact, I wrote a Doctor Who episode called ‘The Girl In The Fireplace’ as a direct response to it,” Moffat said at the time of the series’ sale to HBO. “When, in her next novel, Audrey had a character watching that very episode, I realized she was probably on to me. All these years later, the chance to adapt the novel itself, is a dream come true. The brave new world of long form television is now ready for this kind of depth and complexity. It’s a story of happy ever after – but not necessarily in that order.”

Niffenegger’s novel, published in 2003, tells of the story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who has a genetic disorder that makes him travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist who falls in love with him and has to deal with his condition. Henry and Clare’s passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap.

Leslie, who played Ygritte on Game of Thrones, recently starred in CBS All Access’ The Good Fight and previously recurred on Downton Abbey. She will next be seen in the feature Death on the Nile. Leslie is repped by Hamilton Hodell, UTA, Anonymous Content, and Peikoff Mahan.

Divergent franchise star James’ recent TV series credits include Castlevania and Sandition. He is repped by UTA in the U.S., Markham, Froggatt and Irwin in UK and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.

Rose Leslie: « I am proud of The Good Fight »

Interviewed at the end of September by French magazine « TV Magazine » about Death on the Nile, Rose was also asked a couple of questions about « The Good Fight » which she starred in for 3 seasons from 2017 to 2019. As the third season will premiere on French TV channel « Téva » on November 22nd, they shared what she had to say about the show.

French fans can read the original interview by clicking here ; for the others, I have tried to translate the interview as best as I could :).

Note : they mentioned that Death on the Nile will be released in theatres in early 2021. While the movie has indeed been delayed, no new release date has been announced for now.

INTERVIEW – The wilding from Game of Thrones, wife of Jon Snow – Kit Harington in real life -, is one of the heroines of The Good Fight – a spinoff series of The Good Wife – whose season 3 (2019) premieres on November 22 on Téva.

Michelle and Robert King, writers of the great legal TV show The Good Wife, created a spin-off in 2017 which is also a sequel. Without Julianna Margulies, but with the impeccable Christine Baranski – Diane Lockhart and her chic outfits in the most perfect bad taste. The Kings thus continue to shed light on the machinery of American justice and politics, while sticking to the news, in an increasingly satirical and resolutely anti-Trump spirit. In the third season of this fiction carried by strong female characters, young lawyer Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie) takes off by collaborating with an old barrister, a shrewd old fox, played by Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex, Good Omens ) … Interviewed at the end of September by TV Magazine about Death on the Nile, a new adaptation of Agatha Christie by Kenneth Brannagh, in theaters in early 2021, the British actress spoke enthusiastically about the significance of The Good Fight (at 8:55 pm on Téva), which she left at the end of this season.

TV MAGAZINE. – What seemed most important to you in The Good Fight? Feminism? The engagement against Donald Trump? The defense of the black community?

A bit of all of that, I think. The Good Fight, in the most brilliant way, tends to hold a mirror to America, its political landscape, the way it is made. The show takes real politicians into account and as a point of honor it recalls the truth with relevance. Michelle and Robert King managed to take a bold stand. I am proud to have been part of a project that had the courage to tackle current events, day after day, taking place in Congress, on Capitol Hill, with the passing of laws in progress…

Did you feel like you were carrying a message?

No, because what I liked the most, really, was the way it was presented. The writers told the truth to allow viewers to make up their own minds. The message was not « You should be a Democrat » or « You should be a Republican ». The goal was not to change people, but rather to tell them, « Here are the facts ». These were offered in the form of entertainment in the hope that it would help the public to become informed, to ask the right questions and to create a healthy debate.

Rose to star in new BBC One drama ‘Vigil’

Exciting news ! It has been announced that Rose will play a lead role in a new political thriller alongside Suranne Jones on BBC One. « Vigil » (working title), from the makers of Line of Duty and Bodyguard, centres around a death on board a Trident nuclear submarine. Production will start soon in Scotland ! Read the full statement released by the BBC below :

BBC MEDIA CENTRE – Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama and Charlotte Moore, BBC Director of Content have commissioned Vigil (w/t), a brand new six-part thriller from World Productions, the makers of Line Of Duty and Bodyguard.

Written and created by Bafta-nominated writer Tom Edge (Judy, The Crown, Strike) with episodes by Ed Macdonald (The End Of The F***ing World) and Chandni Lakhani (Dublin Murders). The fictional drama will be directed by Bafta-winner James Strong (Broadchurch, Vanity Fair, Liar) and Isabelle Sieb (Shetland, The Athena).

The series will star Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack, Doctor Foster), Rose Leslie (Game Of Thrones, The Good Fight), Shaun Evans (Endeavour, Whitechapel), Anjli Mohindra (Bodyguard, Bancroft), Martin Compston (Line Of Duty, Mary Queen Of Scots), Paterson Joseph (The Leftovers, Peep Show), Connor Swindells (Sex Education, Jamestown), Adam James (Belgravia, Doctor Foster), and Gary Lewis (His Dark Materials, Billy Elliot).

The mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a death on-board a Trident nuclear submarine bring the police into conflict with the Navy and British security services. DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) leads an investigation on land and at sea into a conspiracy that threatens the very heart of Britain’s nuclear deterrent.

Suranne Jones says: “Tom Edge has created a thrill of a story, set in a world I knew nothing about. The cast and crew World Productions have put together to tell this story is so exciting. Amy Silva is a brilliantly complex character, thrown into a highly charged situation where her authority is weakened. We watch as she navigates her own personal trauma and loss, all at a time when she’s questioning her relationships and life choices. It feels fresh and relevant and I can’t wait to start filming.”

Rose Leslie says: “I was weaned on BBC drama and it is thrilling to be back working at a place that feels like home with Tom Edge’s complex and gripping script. It will be a real honour to work with Suranne and I am looking forward to be filming back in Scotland.«

Writer Tom Edge adds: “I’m completely thrilled to be making this series with the talented people at World Productions and BBC Drama. The ‘Continuous At Sea Deterrent’, better known as ‘Trident’, has been a contentious part of national life for half a century now, a stock of nuclear missiles kept hundreds of feet below the sea surface. But this world has rarely been explored on screen. I can’t wait to take a BBC One audience down with us, into the pitch-black icy waters of the unseen Atlantic, where tomorrow’s geopolitical struggles are already being played out.”

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says, “Vigil is a fantastic, adrenalised thriller set in a shadowy world which has stakes for us all. We are delighted to be working again with World Productions and the exceptionally talented writer, Tom Edge to bring this exciting story to BBC One with an outstanding cast led by Suranne Jones.”

Simon Heath, CEO and Creative Director, World Productions says, “We’re thrilled that the first drama out of our Scottish office is such a timely and gripping idea, brilliantly executed by Tom Edge. We couldn’t ask for a stronger cast, led by the brilliant Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie.”

Vigil (w/t) will be executive produced by Simon Heath (Line Of Duty, Save Me, Bodyguard) for World Productions and Gaynor Holmes for the BBC.

The 6×60’ fictional drama series will be set and filmed in Scotland and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution will be handled by ITV Studios.

« The Good Fight » : Rose Leslie’s exit confirmed

TV LINE — An original Good Fight cast member is exiting the ring.

Rose Leslie — who has played legal eagle Maia Rindell since the CBS All Access drama launched three years ago — will not be returning as a series regular for Season 4. Good Fight creators Robert and Michelle King confirmed the news to TVLine Thursday at San Diego Comic-Con, describing the series’ Season 3 finale as Leslie’s “sendoff.” (The Kings were at SDCC to promote their new fall CBS drama Evil (video of our chat is forthcoming).

News of Leslie’s exit hardly comes as a surprise seeing as how the Season 3 finale literally sent Maia off to Washington D.C., where she was poised to launch a new firm with Michael Sheen’s Roland Blum. Truth be told, the writing has been on the wall since Season 2, when the show’s focus — and overall tone — morphed from legal thriller to Trump-skewering political satire. The ensemble has shifted along with the narrative, with original cast members Justin Bartha and Erica Tazel also being phased out and new blood — from the likes of Audra McDonald, Michael Boatman and Nyambi Nyambi — joining the full-time ranks.
