First look at ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ !

HBO has launched a first-look image at the new drama series THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE, which has just begun production in New York !

The six-episode HBO drama series, directed by the Emmy®-winning David Nutter (“Game of Thrones”, “Band of Brothers”), stars Rose Leslie (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) as Clare and Theo James (“Divergent”) as Henry.

THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE is an intricate and magical love story, adapted by Steven Moffat from the much loved novel by Audrey Niffenegger, that tells the story of Clare and Henry, and a marriage with a problem…time travel.

Joining the cast is Desmin Borges (“You’re the Worst”), as Clare’s best friend, Gomez, and Natasha Lopez (“Runner Runner”), as Charisse, his girlfriend.

Steven Moffat, Writer and Executive Producer quote: “This is a story of loss but it’s not a tragedy. It’s about a time traveler but it’s not science fiction. Despite Clare and Henry’s time scrambled relationship, this is the tale of a grand, ordinary love – but not necessarily in that order. This is a dream project for me. I have always loved Audrey Niffenegger’s extraordinary, moving novel and it has inspired me many times, so to be adapting it for television is the thrill of a lifetime. Working with David Nutter is a joy and an honour already, and with Rose Leslie and Theo James as Clare and Henry, and Natasha Lopez and Desmin Borges as Charisse and Gomez, this is going to be the love story we need right now.

Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Drama Programming quote: “Steven Moffat is the perfect writer to bring this beloved book and genre-bending story about marriage to life. We also couldn’t be more thrilled that David Nutter will be returning to HBO to direct all episodes of the season.«

THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE is an HBO and Warner Bros. Television production based on the book by Audrey Niffenegger, is executive produced by Steven Moffat (“Doctor Who,” “Sherlock”), Sue Vertue, and Brian Minchin through Hartswood Films; Joseph E. Iberti; and David Nutter.

Rose Leslie & Theo James To Star In ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ HBO Series

Rose Leslie & Theo James To Star In ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ HBO Series

2021 is off to a good start for Rose : a few weeks ago, she gave birth to her first child with husband Kit Harington, a boy – congratulations to them ! ♥ (The news was confirmed after they stepped out with their baby in London but as usual, pictures taken without their consent by paparazzi invading their privacy are not shared here.)

Today, it has been announced that Rose has landed the titular role in HBO’s adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife ! The series is currently in pre-production and is rumored to start filming in May in NYC.

Rose Leslie and Theo James have been tapped as the leads in The Time Traveler’s Wife, HBO’s drama series based on the novel by Audrey Niffenegger.

Adapted by former Dr. Who head writer and Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat, The Time Traveler’s Wife tells the intricate love story of Clare (Leslie) and Henry (James), and a marriage with a problem… time travel.

The series marks Game of Thrones alumna’s Leslie return to HBO. Her Claire Abshire is fiery, clever and unstoppable – and for most of her life she’s had an amazing secret. Since she was six years old, Clare has had an imaginary friend: a kind and funny man, sometimes old, sometimes young, who appears in the woods behind her house and tells her tales of the future. Visits from the mysterious Henry are the bright spots in the tedium of her childhood. As the years pass, and she grows into a beautiful young woman, she starts to realize her friend is not imaginary – he’s a time traveler, visiting from the future. And he’s not just from any old future – he’s from her future. Clare has a literal date with destiny. One day she’s going to meet a young man called Henry DeTamble – whom she’ll know very well but who won’t recognize her at all – and she will become the time traveler’s wife.

James’s Henry DeTamble has a problem. Since he was eight years old he’s been time traveler. It’s not a superpower, it’s a condition – he can’t help it. Sometimes, when Henry is stressed or worried – and sometimes for no reason at all – he loses his grip on the current moment and falls naked into the past or the future. One minute he’s making breakfast, the next he’s naked at a hoedown in 1973. He can be stuck there for minutes or months, he never knows. His life is a rollercoaster of constant danger and white-knuckle survival. Until one day he meets a beautiful redhead in the library where he works. Her name is Clare Abshire and although he’s never seen her before, she claims to have known him all her life. Finally his curse has given him something good – and Clare and Henry are about to have the time of their lives!

Moffat, Sue Vertue and Brian Minchin executive produce through their Hartswood Films. The company produces in association with Warner Bros. Television, which has rights to the title. Warner Bros.’ New Line division was behind the 2009 feature adaptation of the book that starred Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana. The series is currently in pre-production.

The Time Traveler’s Wife has been a priority project for HBO, which landed it in 2018 in a highly competitive situation with a straight-to-series order.

“I read Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife many years ago, and I fell in love with it. In fact, I wrote a Doctor Who episode called ‘The Girl In The Fireplace’ as a direct response to it,” Moffat said at the time of the series’ sale to HBO. “When, in her next novel, Audrey had a character watching that very episode, I realized she was probably on to me. All these years later, the chance to adapt the novel itself, is a dream come true. The brave new world of long form television is now ready for this kind of depth and complexity. It’s a story of happy ever after – but not necessarily in that order.”

Niffenegger’s novel, published in 2003, tells of the story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who has a genetic disorder that makes him travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist who falls in love with him and has to deal with his condition. Henry and Clare’s passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap.

Leslie, who played Ygritte on Game of Thrones, recently starred in CBS All Access’ The Good Fight and previously recurred on Downton Abbey. She will next be seen in the feature Death on the Nile. Leslie is repped by Hamilton Hodell, UTA, Anonymous Content, and Peikoff Mahan.

Divergent franchise star James’ recent TV series credits include Castlevania and Sandition. He is repped by UTA in the U.S., Markham, Froggatt and Irwin in UK and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.

1883 MAGAZINE — Best known for her curve bow carrying, screen-stealing turn as Ygritte, spearwife of the free folk in fantasy phenomenon, Game of Thrones, Scots-born Rose Leslie will next find herself in an altogether different ensemble cast, as Louise Bourget in the big-screen adaptation of Agatha Christie in « Death on the Nile ». Whilst detective novels and the « whodunnit » genre may be amongst Leslie’s favorite literature, flexing her French accent muscle and the chance to work alongside director Kenneth Branagh gave the much-loved classic new appeal. We caught up with Leslie to marvel at how far she’s traveled since her Honeymoon days, why she considers audiences never will tire of Agatha Christie, and how she loves nothing more than playing the outcast.

You happen to be in director Leigh Janiak’s debut, teen horror film Honeymoon back in 2014 and I’ve actually had the pleasure of speaking with her… Although essentially a slasher film, the character and narrative elements were so strong that the horror just worked around it. In a way, there is that to these Agatha Christie adaptations… What attracted you to the role of Louise Bourget in Death on the Nile ?

Ah yes, Leigh, of course. She’s a superb writer/director. In a way, Honeymoon was a « whodunnit ». It was a joy; we were out in North Carolina filming for that. With Death on the Nile, my character Louise Bourget, is obviously French and when I was about ten years [old], my family decided to uproot from Scotland to France. So, I went to a bilingual school for about three years – and I think it was the allure of playing someone with a French accent. I love accents; it is something I am always drawn to. But obviously, also knowing that Kenneth Branagh was at the helm and hearing of his outstanding dedication on Murder on the Orient Express and knowing he totally gets this Agatha Christie world was so appealing.

You’re a very good accent person…. Didn’t you play an American in Morgan ?

Yes, you are right, Morgan !

You’ve worked across so many genres, but mainly on strong, long-form TV series, most notably on Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey, Luther and The Good Fight. Tell me about the challenges of going back to a film set for Death on the Nile ? In particular, one which revolves around such a strong ensemble cast ?

That was a pull. It’s so enjoyable to be part of an ensemble which has been the case in those past TV projects too. I would say certainly with TV projects and film, the real difference for me is the scale. It is just larger, and we concentrate the whole five months onto this one script, whereas the pace is a lot faster in television. It’s something I enjoyed going back to ; dedicating a day to two scenes rather than dedicating a day to seven. It’s definitely a different set-up.
