Rose Leslie Joins ‘The Good Wife’ Spinoff

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie has joined the upcoming CBS All Access drama as a series regular, it was announced Wednesday.

Leslie will play Maia, Diane’s goddaughter who joins her firm just after passing the bar, and is a key part of Diane’s plan for the future.

We’re thrilled to have Rose on board,” showrunners Robert and Michelle King said. “We needed a young actress who could hold her own with Christine Baranski and Cush Jumbo, and Rose is perfect. She’s real, she’s strong and she can play comedy. If we designed an actress from the ground up, we couldn’t have done better.

In addition to Baranski and Jumbo, who were both series regulars on the flagship series, Leslie also joins spinoff cast member Sarah Steele. Steele, who recurred for six of the drama’s seven seasons as Eli’s daughter (and Alicia’s body woman), Marissa Gold.

The still-untitled spinoff will center around an enormous financial scam that has destroyed the reputation of a young lawyer, while simultaneously wiping out her mentor Diane Lockhart’s savings. Forced out of Lockhart & Lee, Diane joins Lucca Quinn at one of Chicago’s pre-eminent law firms.

The 10-episode first season was originally set to premiere on CBS All Access sometime in spring 2017, following the January launch of the streamer’s first original scripted series, Star Trek: Discovery. However, last month CBS All Access bumped Star Trek back to May and pushed the premiere of The Good Wife offshoot to February. The first episode of the spinoff will now also premiere first on CBS.

The Kings, who created the original series, also came onboard as showrunners last month. They will exec produce with Phil Alden Robinson, who co-wrote the premiere with the Kings, as well as Ridley Scott, David Zucker, Liz Glotzer, Brooke Kennedy and Alison Cross also serve as executive producers. Like the original series, CBS Television Studios will produce in association with Scott Free Productions and King Size Productions. (source)

Rose voiced young Gertrude Bell in « Letters from Baghdad »

The 60th BFI London Film Festival is underway and it has appeared that Rose is involved in a movie screened this year, « Letters from Baghdad », a documentary about the life of Gertrude Bell directed by Sabine Krayenbühl and Zeva Oelbaum. Bell was a pioneering English writer, archaeologist, diplomat and spy whose travels through the Arabian desert gave her local knowledge unparalleled by her British peers. Recruited by British Military Intelligence after World War I, she played a significant – often unrecognised – role in British imperial policy-making in the Middle East, notably Iraq. (source)

Rose voiced the young Gertrude and Tilda Swinton the old Gertrude.

A first screening was planned yesterday (October 9) and a second one will take place today. You can learn more about the movie here.

DreamWorks Shuts Down Ghost Story ‘Haunted’ Weeks Before Start Date

A sad news has been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter today : the movie that Rose was supposed to start filming this month in Boston, the Spielberg’s produced Haunted, has been shut down by Dreamworks and won’t be filmed soon as the director is now off the project. However, « the studio plans to continue developing Haunted based on the original screenplay by the Hayes brothers. » Let’s hope Rose will still be attached to the project when a new director will be found.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – DreamWorks has pulled the plug on Haunted, an under-the-radar movie that was just weeks away from beginning filming. Steven Spielberg and others involved with the project, a ghost tale said to have been inspired by Henry James 1898 The Turn of the Screw, were deeply displeased with a total rewrite of the script by director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Scott Z. Burns (Contagion). DreamWorks is said to have sunk about $5 million into preparing the film, which had a budget of about $17 million.

The film had been greenlighted based on a script by Chad and Carey Hayes (The Conjuring) and Rose Leslie, who played the wilding Ygritte on Game of Thrones, was recently cast to star. Producing were Scott Bernstein and Roy Lee.

But Fresnadillo, collaborating with Burns, turned in a revision that made dramatic changes — including the title, the characters and the action — so as to render the project unrecognizable, according to sources.

There had been some concern about the choice of Fresnadillo, the Spanish director who most recently directed the pilot Falling Water, which has been picked up by USA Network. His best-known film is 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, which grossed $64.2 million worldwide. But a source says that was only after executive producers Danny Boyle and Alex Garland became extensively involved. Still, Spielberg felt that the director had the skills for the project.

The project, which was to shoot under the DreamWorks label, would have been one of the first new projects to move forward since DreamWorks, Amblin and Participant formed the new Amblin Partners late last year, and Dreamworks, after distributing its movies through Disney since 2008, struck a new distribution deal with Universal.

While Fresnadillo is now off the project, the studio hopes to continue to develop it based on the original Hayes brothers’ script.
