Rose Leslie to voice Red Riding Hood in Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’

BRITISH COMEDY GUIDE – BBC One has announced an animated version of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes.

The two part series, which will be shown on TV this Christmas, will feature an all-star cast, including David Walliams and Rob Brydon.

Revolting Rhymes, written in 1982 by Roald Dahl, is a collection of six witty rhymes which retell classic fairy tales with playful twists and surprising endings. Animation studio Magic Light Pictures has now animated five of these for the BBC.

The chosen stories are Little Red Riding Hood, Snow-White, Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella.

Walliams and Brydon will play various roles in the show, including voicing the Ugly Sisters, as well as Jack’s Mother and the King respectively. Meanwhile Friday Night Dinner star Tamsin Greig will lend her voice to the roles of the Babysitter and Miss Maclahose.

Other stars include Bertie Carvel, who plays both the Magic Mirror and the Prince; Gemma Chan as Snow White; Rose Leslie as Red Riding Hood; Isaac Hempstead Wright as Jack; and Bel Powley as Cindy. (source)

Rose Leslie Joins ‘The Good Wife’ Spinoff

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie has joined the upcoming CBS All Access drama as a series regular, it was announced Wednesday.

Leslie will play Maia, Diane’s goddaughter who joins her firm just after passing the bar, and is a key part of Diane’s plan for the future.

We’re thrilled to have Rose on board,” showrunners Robert and Michelle King said. “We needed a young actress who could hold her own with Christine Baranski and Cush Jumbo, and Rose is perfect. She’s real, she’s strong and she can play comedy. If we designed an actress from the ground up, we couldn’t have done better.

In addition to Baranski and Jumbo, who were both series regulars on the flagship series, Leslie also joins spinoff cast member Sarah Steele. Steele, who recurred for six of the drama’s seven seasons as Eli’s daughter (and Alicia’s body woman), Marissa Gold.

The still-untitled spinoff will center around an enormous financial scam that has destroyed the reputation of a young lawyer, while simultaneously wiping out her mentor Diane Lockhart’s savings. Forced out of Lockhart & Lee, Diane joins Lucca Quinn at one of Chicago’s pre-eminent law firms.

The 10-episode first season was originally set to premiere on CBS All Access sometime in spring 2017, following the January launch of the streamer’s first original scripted series, Star Trek: Discovery. However, last month CBS All Access bumped Star Trek back to May and pushed the premiere of The Good Wife offshoot to February. The first episode of the spinoff will now also premiere first on CBS.

The Kings, who created the original series, also came onboard as showrunners last month. They will exec produce with Phil Alden Robinson, who co-wrote the premiere with the Kings, as well as Ridley Scott, David Zucker, Liz Glotzer, Brooke Kennedy and Alison Cross also serve as executive producers. Like the original series, CBS Television Studios will produce in association with Scott Free Productions and King Size Productions. (source)

Rose voiced young Gertrude Bell in « Letters from Baghdad »

The 60th BFI London Film Festival is underway and it has appeared that Rose is involved in a movie screened this year, « Letters from Baghdad », a documentary about the life of Gertrude Bell directed by Sabine Krayenbühl and Zeva Oelbaum. Bell was a pioneering English writer, archaeologist, diplomat and spy whose travels through the Arabian desert gave her local knowledge unparalleled by her British peers. Recruited by British Military Intelligence after World War I, she played a significant – often unrecognised – role in British imperial policy-making in the Middle East, notably Iraq. (source)

Rose voiced the young Gertrude and Tilda Swinton the old Gertrude.

A first screening was planned yesterday (October 9) and a second one will take place today. You can learn more about the movie here.

DreamWorks Shuts Down Ghost Story ‘Haunted’ Weeks Before Start Date

A sad news has been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter today : the movie that Rose was supposed to start filming this month in Boston, the Spielberg’s produced Haunted, has been shut down by Dreamworks and won’t be filmed soon as the director is now off the project. However, « the studio plans to continue developing Haunted based on the original screenplay by the Hayes brothers. » Let’s hope Rose will still be attached to the project when a new director will be found.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – DreamWorks has pulled the plug on Haunted, an under-the-radar movie that was just weeks away from beginning filming. Steven Spielberg and others involved with the project, a ghost tale said to have been inspired by Henry James 1898 The Turn of the Screw, were deeply displeased with a total rewrite of the script by director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Scott Z. Burns (Contagion). DreamWorks is said to have sunk about $5 million into preparing the film, which had a budget of about $17 million.

The film had been greenlighted based on a script by Chad and Carey Hayes (The Conjuring) and Rose Leslie, who played the wilding Ygritte on Game of Thrones, was recently cast to star. Producing were Scott Bernstein and Roy Lee.

But Fresnadillo, collaborating with Burns, turned in a revision that made dramatic changes — including the title, the characters and the action — so as to render the project unrecognizable, according to sources.

There had been some concern about the choice of Fresnadillo, the Spanish director who most recently directed the pilot Falling Water, which has been picked up by USA Network. His best-known film is 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, which grossed $64.2 million worldwide. But a source says that was only after executive producers Danny Boyle and Alex Garland became extensively involved. Still, Spielberg felt that the director had the skills for the project.

The project, which was to shoot under the DreamWorks label, would have been one of the first new projects to move forward since DreamWorks, Amblin and Participant formed the new Amblin Partners late last year, and Dreamworks, after distributing its movies through Disney since 2008, struck a new distribution deal with Universal.

While Fresnadillo is now off the project, the studio hopes to continue to develop it based on the original Hayes brothers’ script.

InStyle UK Interview

INSTYLEEven though it’s a horror, Morgan is aesthetically very beautiful, with fabulous landscapes shots. Where did you film? Near Belfast in Northern Ireland, which is slightly coincidental given that I filmed some of my three years on Game of Thrones in the same area. It’s a beautiful part of the world and I was very happy to go back.

Did you stay out in the wilderness to keep the theme of isolation up on set? I wish I could tell you I did – that I was gung-ho and daring – but actually, we all went back to a cosy hotel in Belfast every single evening. Sadly, hot baths got the better of me; at the end of each day I wanted to go back to a place of warmth.

How did filming Morgan differ to filming something like Game of Thrones? Obviously there’s the genre. With Game of Thrones you’re not really dealing with anything that is based in reality. You have dragons and magic and all of that. Even though with Morgan your dealing with modified beings – and therefore its not quite grounded in reality- it’s still very much based in the here and the now, which makes the filming experience much more relatable.

You’ve had a varied career and have starred in period drams (Downton Abbey) cop shows (Luther) fantasy (Game of Thrones) and now horror. Is there a genre you’ve yet to cut your teeth in? I would love to do comedy but you have to be phenomenally good. I’m not sure I’m there yet. I can imagine it being so much fun but I don’t think I’ve quite got the gall to go ahead just yet…

You’re American pronunciation in Morgan is spot on, as was your Northern one in Game of Thrones and your ‘common’ maid voice in Downton. Can you nail any accent? I was brought up with two brothers, the eldest who has one hell of an ear for hearing accents and regurgitating them straight away. So I was always in competition with him when we were growing up, it was a case of who could do accents the best. Still, it was brilliant practice and he honed my love of a great accent. I’ve played American characters before so I’ve naturally become more at ease. Still, there are some American words that I cannot get my tongue around but, if you keep it flowing, you are never too far away from the truth.

Your own accent has attracted a fair few comments… I know! I don’t know if I’ve ever acted using my normal accent so people are always rather suprised to hear how I talk (Ed: it’s very posh.) People say how come I’m from Scotland yet I sound like the Queen?! I went to boarding school in Somerset, which has probably got something to do with it.

First we had Humans that was about artificial life, and now we have Morgan. Do you think A.I is going to become a reality in our lifetime? A couple of weeks prior to getting my hands on the script for Morgan, I’d been reading about hotels in China where the receptionists are robotic. It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it? Then, when doing my research for the role in Morgan, I also found out that bioengineering is becoming ever more prevalent which fascinates me. I think it’s going to be something we hear more and more of. I loved Humans – it was so creepy! – but would I have a synth? I just don’t know… (source)

Rose Leslie to star in ‘Haunted’

Rose has been set to play the lead in Haunted, the DreamWorks thriller that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is directing:

Last week, the news broke that Alfre Woodard will be starring in gothic ghost story Haunted. Now we know at least one person who will joining her in the cast, as Game Of Thrones veteran Rose Leslie has signed on to play the lead.

Loosely based on Henry James’ Turn Of The Screw, the film will see a young woman (Leslie) arriving to work at a wealthy estate, but who soon starts to believe that the house is haunted. And things take a turn for the creepier when she starts to suspect that the children in her care are possessed. As for Woodard, all we know about her character so far is that she’ll be someone who already works at the mansion.

This one comes from a team with real horror chops including director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Conjuring writers Chad and Carey Hayes.

Leslie, who tackled terror with 2014’s Honeymoon, will also face a scary situation in sci-fi thriller Morgan, which arrives here on September 2.

In other news, seems that Rose won’t be part of Sensory and The Angel Makers anymore.

The Star : « From thrones to office chairs for TV star Rose »

THESTAR.CO.UK – Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie is playing another feisty young woman on stage in Sheffield. Rose played warrior Ygritte in the hit series, the love interest of central character Jon Snow, until the character was killed off a couple of years ago.

She said: “I had such a wonderful time. I went to Comic-Con in San Diego, which was a most extraordinary experience and so enjoyable. We did a Q&A in front of 6,000 fans.”

Big-scale TV is just about as different as it gets to theatre in a small studio. Rose is in Sheffield to co-star with Sara Stewart in Mike Bartlett’s play Contractions, which looks at what happens when a young office worker breaks the company rules by starting a relationship with a co-worker. Her character Emma comes under the scrutiny of her manager, who ruthlessly analyses the relationship. Rose said: “Emma starts off as very spirited and ambitious but not in a ruthless way. She’s a determined young woman. She’s intelligent and is blissfully unaware of the troubles that are about to hit her in the way that the corporation bleeds into her life with its needs to know about her personal life. It manipulates her to where she is a shell of the woman she was at the beginning.

The staging, with the two women enclosed in a disc of light, really adds to the atmosphere, even down to the furniture, said Rose. “Sara has a really comfy chair and mine is really uncomfortable with a hard back! It feeds into the character. » She added: “The beauty of the way that Lisa’s staging is it’s in its own entity. It’s a circular stage in the round and we don’t ever really step outside of it.

Rose said that was a perfect way to portray the sparring dialogue between the two actors, written by rising star playwright Mike Bartlett. Mike Bartlett’s play Bull premiered at the Crucible Studio last year wand King Charles III has just been seen at the Lyceum, starring Robert Powell. He also wrote TV thriller Doctor Foster, about a woman’s reaction to her husband’s affair, which is about to go into a second series featuring Rose’s co-star Sara Stewart.

Rose said: “It’s very much me and her playing a game of chess and dancing around each other. Emma has the arrogance of youth and believes she is on the same level as the manager but she gets very chewed up and spat out at the end.” Contractions continues at the Crucible Studio until July 16. Box office: at the theatre, call 0114 249 6000 or go online at Sheffield Theatres (source)
