Like most of us, lockdown forced Rose Leslie into a period of reflection. Ahead of her new Agatha Christie adaptation, the actor shares what she learned with Stylist.

If I come across a lake or stream I’m always drawn to jumping in and immersing myself in the cold water; it’s a thrill.” Rose Leslie is telling Stylist about her love of cold water swimming, which she braves, without a wetsuit, year-round.

It’s one of the reasons she’s excited about returning to Glasgow next week to resume filming new BBC drama Vigil (which was paused for – well, you know why: the c-word), a police thriller by the creators of Bodyguard, likely to air in 2021. Leslie stars alongside Suranne Jones, as they investigate the disappearance of a fishing trawler and a death on a nuclear submarine. It’s not only the water that draws her back north of the border, it also feels like home. Leslie was raised in a castle in Aberdeenshire, although she now lives in London with her husband Kit Harington, also an actor, and the whippet puppy they have been raising during lockdown.

The last few months have been a time to reflect on her fast-paced life and a career that has been as varied and chameleon-like as any young actor might hope for, taking in huge American dramas Game Of Thrones (she met Harington on set) and The Good Fight and hit British shows including Downton Abbey and Luther. Next month we’ll see her in Death On The Nile, an all-star cinematic adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel. In conversation, Leslie is as refreshing as that cold water she likes to throw herself into. She’s smart, funny and open, and our chat runs from anxiety and social media insecurity to the joy of Daisy Cooper in This Country.

I FIND SOMETHING REASSURING ABOUT AN AGATHA CHRISTIE NOVEL OR ADAPTATION. WHAT WAS THE APPEAL FOR YOU OF MAKING DEATH ON THE NILE?

“The appeal was not only to work with Sir Kenneth Branagh, but who doesn’t love an Agatha Christie? Detective stories are right up my street. I’ve always found it quite cathartic that justice is served at the end. It’s also the decadence of Agatha Christie and her world, the costumes are so fabulous and the world is so polished. It’s a warm hug.”

ARE YOU ADEPT AT FIGURING OUT WHO DID DO IT?

“No. I can work it out several pages before [the reveal] but that’s it. I remember reading Big Little Lies and a good friend worked out that it was the horrendous abusive husband. That had not landed with me. Despite revelling in those books, I’m not good at sussing them out.”

Rose to star in new BBC One drama ‘Vigil’

Exciting news ! It has been announced that Rose will play a lead role in a new political thriller alongside Suranne Jones on BBC One. “Vigil” (working title), from the makers of Line of Duty and Bodyguard, centres around a death on board a Trident nuclear submarine. Production will start soon in Scotland ! Read the full statement released by the BBC below :

BBC MEDIA CENTRE – Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama and Charlotte Moore, BBC Director of Content have commissioned Vigil (w/t), a brand new six-part thriller from World Productions, the makers of Line Of Duty and Bodyguard.

Written and created by Bafta-nominated writer Tom Edge (Judy, The Crown, Strike) with episodes by Ed Macdonald (The End Of The F***ing World) and Chandni Lakhani (Dublin Murders). The fictional drama will be directed by Bafta-winner James Strong (Broadchurch, Vanity Fair, Liar) and Isabelle Sieb (Shetland, The Athena).

The series will star Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack, Doctor Foster), Rose Leslie (Game Of Thrones, The Good Fight), Shaun Evans (Endeavour, Whitechapel), Anjli Mohindra (Bodyguard, Bancroft), Martin Compston (Line Of Duty, Mary Queen Of Scots), Paterson Joseph (The Leftovers, Peep Show), Connor Swindells (Sex Education, Jamestown), Adam James (Belgravia, Doctor Foster), and Gary Lewis (His Dark Materials, Billy Elliot).

The mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a death on-board a Trident nuclear submarine bring the police into conflict with the Navy and British security services. DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) leads an investigation on land and at sea into a conspiracy that threatens the very heart of Britain’s nuclear deterrent.

Suranne Jones says: “Tom Edge has created a thrill of a story, set in a world I knew nothing about. The cast and crew World Productions have put together to tell this story is so exciting. Amy Silva is a brilliantly complex character, thrown into a highly charged situation where her authority is weakened. We watch as she navigates her own personal trauma and loss, all at a time when she’s questioning her relationships and life choices. It feels fresh and relevant and I can’t wait to start filming.”

Rose Leslie says: “I was weaned on BBC drama and it is thrilling to be back working at a place that feels like home with Tom Edge’s complex and gripping script. It will be a real honour to work with Suranne and I am looking forward to be filming back in Scotland.

Writer Tom Edge adds: “I’m completely thrilled to be making this series with the talented people at World Productions and BBC Drama. The ‘Continuous At Sea Deterrent’, better known as ‘Trident’, has been a contentious part of national life for half a century now, a stock of nuclear missiles kept hundreds of feet below the sea surface. But this world has rarely been explored on screen. I can’t wait to take a BBC One audience down with us, into the pitch-black icy waters of the unseen Atlantic, where tomorrow’s geopolitical struggles are already being played out.”

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says, “Vigil is a fantastic, adrenalised thriller set in a shadowy world which has stakes for us all. We are delighted to be working again with World Productions and the exceptionally talented writer, Tom Edge to bring this exciting story to BBC One with an outstanding cast led by Suranne Jones.”

Simon Heath, CEO and Creative Director, World Productions says, “We’re thrilled that the first drama out of our Scottish office is such a timely and gripping idea, brilliantly executed by Tom Edge. We couldn’t ask for a stronger cast, led by the brilliant Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie.”

Vigil (w/t) will be executive produced by Simon Heath (Line Of Duty, Save Me, Bodyguard) for World Productions and Gaynor Holmes for the BBC.

The 6×60’ fictional drama series will be set and filmed in Scotland and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution will be handled by ITV Studios.

Rose to star in ‘Death on the Nile’ directed by Kenneth Branagh

After it had been announced last week that Rose couldn’t attend the Emmy Awards with husband Kit Harington because of work obligations, we were waiting for an official announcement to find out what she was working on… And the exciting news has finally been shared today :

MOVIEWEB.COM – Production has officially begun on 20th Century Fox’s Death on the Nile with director Kenneth Branagh at U.K.’s Longcross Studios and on location in Egypt. Agatha Christie’s mystery-thriller reunites the filmmaking team from 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express and features an all-star cast Including Kenneth Branagh, Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders and Letitia Wright.

It was announced that shooting on Twentieth Century Fox’s Death on the Nile a mystery-thriller based on the book by famed author Agatha Christie, has begun. Based on another celebrated Christie novel, Death on the Nile will be released on October 9, 2020.

The screenplay for the film, adapted from Christie’s 1937 novel, is once again written by Michael Green with Ridley Scott, Mark Gordon, Simon Kinberg, Kenneth Branagh and Judy Hofflund returning as producers. Matthew Jenkins and James Prichard return as executive producers.

In Death on the Nile, Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian adventure aboard a glamorous river steamer descends into a terrifying search for a murderer when an idyllic honeymoon is shattered by violent deaths. This sinister tale of obsessive love and its murderous consequences plays out in an epic landscape of danger and foreboding, with enough shocking twists and turns to leave audiences unsettled and guessing until the final, shocking denouement. Says Kenneth Branagh.

Crimes of passion are dangerously sexy. Agatha Christie has written a riveting story of emotional chaos and violent criminality and Michael Green has once again written a screenplay to match. With a cherished group of long-time artistic collaborators and a brilliant international cast, it is truly a pleasure to join Disney, Fox and Agatha Christie, Ltd. in bringing this daring thriller to the big screen. There are significant new twists, an awe-inspiring desert landscape and a chance to celebrate big screen entertainment in glorious 65 millimetre celluloid!

Disney is positioning Death on the Nile as one of Fall 2020’s biggest releases, and will be releasing the movie under the 20th Century Fox banner after the acquisition of the movie studio earlier this year. (source)

“The Good Fight” : Rose Leslie’s exit confirmed

TV LINE — An original Good Fight cast member is exiting the ring.

Rose Leslie — who has played legal eagle Maia Rindell since the CBS All Access drama launched three years ago — will not be returning as a series regular for Season 4. Good Fight creators Robert and Michelle King confirmed the news to TVLine Thursday at San Diego Comic-Con, describing the series’ Season 3 finale as Leslie’s “sendoff.” (The Kings were at SDCC to promote their new fall CBS drama Evil (video of our chat is forthcoming).

News of Leslie’s exit hardly comes as a surprise seeing as how the Season 3 finale literally sent Maia off to Washington D.C., where she was poised to launch a new firm with Michael Sheen’s Roland Blum. Truth be told, the writing has been on the wall since Season 2, when the show’s focus — and overall tone — morphed from legal thriller to Trump-skewering political satire. The ensemble has shifted along with the narrative, with original cast members Justin Bartha and Erica Tazel also being phased out and new blood — from the likes of Audra McDonald, Michael Boatman and Nyambi Nyambi — joining the full-time ranks.
