Rose called Absolute Radio today to chat with host Christian O’Connell for « Who’s Calling Christian » (a competition in which celebrities call for the chance to win £20,000 towards the charity of their choice). THE TELEGRAPH – Rose Leslie has just had her first holiday in over a year, in the south of France with some girlfriends. ‘Obviously, you can see I’m sporting a brilliant tan,’ she jokes when we meet in London, holding out her pale, freckled arms. ‘They all became bronzed goddesses, while I was stuck in the shade, slowly but surely turning into a lobster.’
She’s wearing a relaxed, stylish denim jumpsuit and actually looks great, with not a hint of sunburn. But Rose, 29, is never slow to tell a story in which she looks daft, whether it’s about performing a humiliating face-plant while running over Icelandic terrain in Game of Thrones, or an inability to dance in her new film Sticky Notes, in which she plays… a professional dancer. ‘I’m British!’ she says, when I point out her self-deprecating trait. ‘What can I say?’
The middle of five children, she says in a large family this kind of humour is a survival skill. ‘There’s a huge thing of taking the piss out of yourself. If you don’t, you get gunned by your siblings.’ The irony is that as an actress, Rose has a lot to be proud of. One of her first jobs was a major role in Downton Abbey, as ambitious maid Gwen Parkes. It could have been hard to top that, but she managed it with the global phenomenon that is Game of Thrones, possibly the biggest show in TV history. Her character, the fiery, feral wildling Ygritte, first appeared in 2012 in season two, and her flirty love/hate relationship with one of the central characters, Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington), was riveting to watch – especially after Rose and Kit became a couple in real life.
In a show where sex is frequently about power and, as Rose says, ‘Getting your kit off is almost like a rite of passage for a woman within the series,’ the moment when Ygritte and Jon become lovers is surprising for being a genuinely tender scene. ‘They only had eyes for each other and there was no game play,’ Rose says. But for the actors themselves, the scene had no romance at all. She tells me it took several takes to shed her character’s furs gracefully, and then there was an awkward moment when she realised she’d forgotten to loosen her laces before the cameras rolled, so she was hopping about half-naked, trying to pull her boots off. ‘Luckily that scene wasn’t shot in Iceland,’ she laughs, ‘otherwise we’d all have been freezing!’ On set, like many couples involved in an office romance, she and Harington tried to keep their relationship secret. ‘But we failed miserably. We wouldn’t flirt in front of other people [and] we thought that nobody knew, but they did. And it doesn’t matter; it’s fine.’ They’re both private people, though, and neither wants to offer up their whole lives for scrutiny. But with so many paparazzi shots of them together, it was also pointless continuing to be coy about the relationship. In April, they finally made their official public debut as a couple at the Olivier Awards in London. ‘He was presenting an award, and it was wonderful to get ready for the red carpet together.’ […]

INSTYLE – Even though it’s a horror, Morgan is aesthetically very beautiful, with fabulous landscapes shots. Where did you film? Near Belfast in Northern Ireland, which is slightly coincidental given that I filmed some of my three years on Game of Thrones in the same area. It’s a beautiful part of the world and I was very happy to go back.
Did you stay out in the wilderness to keep the theme of isolation up on set? I wish I could tell you I did – that I was gung-ho and daring – but actually, we all went back to a cosy hotel in Belfast every single evening. Sadly, hot baths got the better of me; at the end of each day I wanted to go back to a place of warmth.
How did filming Morgan differ to filming something like Game of Thrones? Obviously there’s the genre. With Game of Thrones you’re not really dealing with anything that is based in reality. You have dragons and magic and all of that. Even though with Morgan your dealing with modified beings – and therefore its not quite grounded in reality- it’s still very much based in the here and the now, which makes the filming experience much more relatable.
You’ve had a varied career and have starred in period drams (Downton Abbey) cop shows (Luther) fantasy (Game of Thrones) and now horror. Is there a genre you’ve yet to cut your teeth in? I would love to do comedy but you have to be phenomenally good. I’m not sure I’m there yet. I can imagine it being so much fun but I don’t think I’ve quite got the gall to go ahead just yet…
You’re American pronunciation in Morgan is spot on, as was your Northern one in Game of Thrones and your ‘common’ maid voice in Downton. Can you nail any accent? I was brought up with two brothers, the eldest who has one hell of an ear for hearing accents and regurgitating them straight away. So I was always in competition with him when we were growing up, it was a case of who could do accents the best. Still, it was brilliant practice and he honed my love of a great accent. I’ve played American characters before so I’ve naturally become more at ease. Still, there are some American words that I cannot get my tongue around but, if you keep it flowing, you are never too far away from the truth.
Your own accent has attracted a fair few comments… I know! I don’t know if I’ve ever acted using my normal accent so people are always rather suprised to hear how I talk (Ed: it’s very posh.) People say how come I’m from Scotland yet I sound like the Queen?! I went to boarding school in Somerset, which has probably got something to do with it.
First we had Humans that was about artificial life, and now we have Morgan. Do you think A.I is going to become a reality in our lifetime? A couple of weeks prior to getting my hands on the script for Morgan, I’d been reading about hotels in China where the receptionists are robotic. It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it? Then, when doing my research for the role in Morgan, I also found out that bioengineering is becoming ever more prevalent which fascinates me. I think it’s going to be something we hear more and more of. I loved Humans – it was so creepy! – but would I have a synth? I just don’t know… (source)

In “Morgan,” Rose Leslie plays psychoanalyst Amy who also has a strong connection to Morgan, though her love for it, is “narcissistic, because Amy is mirroring who she is onto Morgan,” explains Rose Leslie, who portrays Amy. “It’s a scary, double-edged sword in the way she loves Morgan because Amy sees herself in Morgan. Amy truly believes she’s embodying Morgan with a soul. For Amy, it’s all about possessiveness.”
The judgment of all the team members has been affected not only by their attachment to their experiment, but by their isolation from the outside world. “They’ve all been in this bubble for five years, so their sense of reality is diminished,” says Leslie. “They spend almost all their time watching Morgan, as if she were in this exotic fishbowl.” (source)

THESTAR.CO.UK – Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie is playing another feisty young woman on stage in Sheffield. Rose played warrior Ygritte in the hit series, the love interest of central character Jon Snow, until the character was killed off a couple of years ago.
She said: “I had such a wonderful time. I went to Comic-Con in San Diego, which was a most extraordinary experience and so enjoyable. We did a Q&A in front of 6,000 fans.”
Big-scale TV is just about as different as it gets to theatre in a small studio. Rose is in Sheffield to co-star with Sara Stewart in Mike Bartlett’s play Contractions, which looks at what happens when a young office worker breaks the company rules by starting a relationship with a co-worker. Her character Emma comes under the scrutiny of her manager, who ruthlessly analyses the relationship. Rose said: “Emma starts off as very spirited and ambitious but not in a ruthless way. She’s a determined young woman. She’s intelligent and is blissfully unaware of the troubles that are about to hit her in the way that the corporation bleeds into her life with its needs to know about her personal life. It manipulates her to where she is a shell of the woman she was at the beginning.”
The staging, with the two women enclosed in a disc of light, really adds to the atmosphere, even down to the furniture, said Rose. “Sara has a really comfy chair and mine is really uncomfortable with a hard back! It feeds into the character. » She added: “The beauty of the way that Lisa’s staging is it’s in its own entity. It’s a circular stage in the round and we don’t ever really step outside of it.”
Rose said that was a perfect way to portray the sparring dialogue between the two actors, written by rising star playwright Mike Bartlett. Mike Bartlett’s play Bull premiered at the Crucible Studio last year wand King Charles III has just been seen at the Lyceum, starring Robert Powell. He also wrote TV thriller Doctor Foster, about a woman’s reaction to her husband’s affair, which is about to go into a second series featuring Rose’s co-star Sara Stewart.
Rose said: “It’s very much me and her playing a game of chess and dancing around each other. Emma has the arrogance of youth and believes she is on the same level as the manager but she gets very chewed up and spat out at the end.” Contractions continues at the Crucible Studio until July 16.
